BIOGRAPHY

Luke Turrell was born in England and currently holds the position of 1st Principal Viola of the Gewandhaus Orchestra in Leipzig. He began learning the viola at the age of 4 with his father, and by the age of 9, he had already been awarded the highest marks in the country for his musical examinations. 


At the age of 10, Luke was accepted into the esteemed Yehudi Menuhin School.

Luke continued his studies at the Universität der Künste in Berlin, where he was guided by renowned violists Prof. Hartmut Rohde and Prof. Wilfried Strehle. His exceptional talent earned him numerous scholarships and accolades, including the "most promising British Violist" award at the Lionel Tertis Viola Competition in 2010.


In 2013, Luke was accepted into the Karajan Academy of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, where he studied under the tutelage of Máté Szűcs. Alongside his job as 1st Principal in the Gewandhaus Orchestra, he also regularly plays as a guest principal with the Sinfonia of London, BRSO, Munich Philharmonic, and many other orchestras throughout Europe and Asia.


Luke is not only a distinguished orchestral musician but also an accomplished chamber musician and soloist. He has performed in countless concerts and festivals across the globe, collaborating with renowned artists and musicians, and has established himself as one of the most versatile and dynamic violists of his generation.
